Here's a question: if Carson Yeung has refused to say how much money Blues had to spend in January when he took over, what would we be all thinking right now?
Just not sure, what have they got to hide, something fishy to me etc. . . ?
That Yeung did reveal the 'ã20 million (dramatic pause) to ã40 million' at his press conference was in part a mistake (never let the sellers know how much the buyers have to play with) and in part refreshing openness, a statement of intent caused by excitement perhaps.
I gather it was not in his original brief to quote figures.
What's happening now is that Alex McLeish is being questioned because he hasn't yet spent the ã40 million, or is likely to, which, in my view, is a bit daft.
There are a few things to remember.
First, it's up to ã40 million to include wages.
Second, Blues superb first-half of the season has lessened the need to go charging in, gamble on a player or two and basically panic because you fear the relegation trapdoor.
Third, the January market has changed, and Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger both say there is no value to be had in it at present.
Fourth, the days of getting an Upson for ã750,000, a Clemence for ã500,000, a Clapham for ã1 million, a Coly for . . . no, scrub that one . . . have gone.
Even a Savage, a Cunningham say; the equivalent sort of players are sitting tight and happy in burgeoning Premier League squads and not available, or don't want to be available.
A bog standard Premier League player costs ã5 million now, plus minimum ã15,000 - ã20,000-a-week wages.
Fifth, attracting players to Blues is still a tough sell. Edin Dzeko, aside from the ã18 million asking price - if not double that, if you believe some reports - has his sights set on bigger fish. Milan Jovanovic wants to run his contract down to join AC Milan in the summer.
Then you have Kevin Kuranyi, who would like to take home ã70,000-a-week net. I was asked a month ago by a Blues director was he worth paying that much.
It's a minefield in January and Blues eighth place in the table and 32-point haul has brought McLeish and the club welcome breathing space.
Blues have a better chance of signing better players in the summer when the transfer kitty, a large chunk having not been blown this month, would enable McLeish to flex more muscle. And the range of players available is greater.
He has put great store in not upsetting the dressing room with dubious characters on big money and fair enough. As I have written before, the esprit de corps is the best it has been since the first promotion to the Premier League in 2002.
But, when push comes the shove, McLeish knows he is going to have to assimilate big earners who have come for big fees if Blues want to maintain their status and progress over time.
That's when it's going to be a test of his judgment and how to man-manage such players and the rest. In that respect, he has dealt with egos at Rangers and run a national team. And there are some strong characters about at Wast Hills too, but he has them all singing from the same hymn sheet.
Sometimes you can be perhaps critical of Eck in that he wants it just so, the sure thing. His diligence is very meticulous. His contacts book is vast, believe me, and he is very well connected in foreign circles. He will ask himself 'is he really better, is he really an improvement?' and counsel many opinions.
The canny Scot in him, maybe, yet better that than a Harry Redknapp style scatter gun approach?
With a club like Celtic looking at ã10 million for an Aiden McGeady, he is just going to have to bite the bullet at some stage and shell out the ã6 million, or ã8 million, or more and so on.
It's the going rate and if Yeung and the owners are happy to pay that - and can sustain the club on such lines - for a player McLeish thinks is the right quality and type, then do it. Across the road at V***a, Martin O'Neill regularly likes to whack out such sums on full-backs who then don't always see the light of day.
McLeish isn't afraid of spending heavy in one hit, don't subscribe to that contrary theory, even though throughout his career he has had to balance the books and his largest outlay was ã6 million for Mikel Arteta.
His comments on the subject on Boxing Day made for interesting reading.
And I am sure it will come, the club record transfer fee will go, if not in this window then in July or August.
Yeung and his board have accepted that now is not the time for 'trophy' signings, who would generate PR but maybe not as many points you might expect.
Again, Blues league position has helped in that respect, and good on them for listening and letting the manager manage. He deserves that after what he went through last season, and soaked it all in like a sponge with quiet dignity.
McLeish needs to slowly but surely beef up the quality and depth of the squad, which won't happen overnight.
I suspect that the major signing(s) will come in the summer and this month it will be about adding solid building blocks.
Go through the team and the roster and it's clear that, eventually, he needs to be securing the next Barry Ferguson, Lee Bowyer, Stephen Carr.
Kevin Phillips, Lee Carsley, Franck Queudrue, Damien Johnson, Marcus Bent, perhaps Gary McSheffrey, Martin Taylor, Garry O'Connor and Maik Taylor, aren't going to be around in 18 months, if not six.
That's why, at present, Michel not Michelangelo is heading to St Andrew's. That's why Kris Boyd has been considered again, as a squad player, not a prime target (although he is likely to stay put until his contract expires in June by all accounts).
Blues need to walk before they can run and that's why no-one should feel let down if McLeish doesn't spend ã40 million - it's not obligatory and hardly realistic in January anyway.

Tatts, thanks for a really well written blog. It just puts into perspective how difficult it is for Eck in this transfer window. We all know that the team needs strengthening but knowing and doing are two totally different things.
Im sure o'hara would be available for less than ã5 million and he is a quality player. We dont need to go all gung ho but surely Mcleish would be daft not to have a gamble on atleast one player judging by the position were in and the fact that its possibly the weakest premiership it has been for years. Next year when newcastle come up it will be a lot stronger, why do we also have the mentality of next year we will do this. Like when are we actually ever going to give the FA cup a go of winning it??? This may have come from us never winning anything but i dont understand by over spending a million here and there as the higher we finish we will get that back from premiership placing. We should be thinking about what we can achieve and not what we have, in years gone by getting an 11th or 12th placing will not be remembered or we will not get some long overdue cups to go into our trophy cabinet. COME ON BLUES, BELIEVE!!!!
Another great blog. Blues fans are lucky to have an excellent local journalist together with an excellent manager. The problem is always going to be unrealistic fans like Michael. Spending money for the sake of satisfying fans like him is shortsighted and stupid. Personally I am happy to leave signings up to Alex after being wrong about several of the present team and in particular Barry Ferguson who has been tremendous
What have i actually said that is unrealistic? I said not to go gung ho, but maybe on ONE OR TWO spend the odd million extra that we would reclaim in premiership placing anyway. We have come so far this season so why pat ourselves on the back and be satisfied with that? We could go for konchesky, gardner, Mcgeady, rodellega, michel & a marquee signing and instead of thinking in the summer about how can we repeat the first half of the season we just had, we could be thinking about the next step. Signing them players who would always keeep their value and offloading the fringe players that are not good enough is a realistic AMBITION, apologises for having some!
I totally understand where McLeish is coming from and agree that much better value is to be had in the summer.
Having said that, regardless of what we spend in the summer do you really think that we will be in this position again this time next year? I think it is very unlikely and therefore it would be nice to buy a couple of 5 million+ players to really build on what we have already achieved and secure a top ten finish.
Doubt it, it will happen, but i think everyone is being naive if they think we will be in this position again in the foreseeable future at this stage of a season.
I think its high time that everyone realised that we FINALLY have a manager who knows what he's doing so you know what? Why don't we just let him manage! January is a time to perhaps bolster the squad where we need it, but only if the quality is right and at the right price. And to all Blues fans, lets jump aboard the POSITIVE band-wagon created by the new owners for once, what a joy to be free of the usual doom & gloom! I really think that has been THE major factor in our superb season so far. Keep right on, we're on the right road at last.
I have to say i completly agree with what Michael said about everyones thoughts of this season. I dont want us to do a Hull, its almost we seem to of gone above ourselves and think seen as we have done well we should stop. The premiership is weak this season and we should take advantage of that- we would be stupid not too really. What do you think Tatts as you seem to be thinking the same from what you have been writting recently, are we stupid to want to win something?
Without the perennial premiership relegation battle hanging over the Blues, this window is a great opportunity to purchase quality young talent to integrate into a settled squad, all ready for next
season. Moses,Bale,McGeady,or look abroad to Pedro Leon - Getafe, Robert Lewandowski -Lech Poznan, Levan Kenia - Schalke 04.
The summer window is where the marquee signings will be made , & who knows what the new owners may hopefully agree too then.
Its a delicate balancing act for McLeish he wants to bring in players to strengthen the squad but at the right price (not the over the top January window prices). Also he wants to keep that great dressing room spirit and doesn't want to bring in an ego on big money. Its a difficult job but Alex is doing the right thing by not wasting money and spending for the sake of spending. With us being in a decent position though this may be a very good opportunity to attract quality players to us who might not usually want to come to us.
I agree with Michael,s realistic and rational comments.Where does caution end and ambition begin?Whilst appreciating the shrewness of "Eck",it is prudent to attract better quality players whilst we are in a position of strength, and currently we have no quality indepth inorder to maintain our current position. It is unrealistic to think we can finish in the top 12 with the current squad.Real quality doesn,t come cheap in this league !!
Any signings need to give 120% and be a team player the same as every player allready here. The squad is not fighting above there weight as they are playing as a team and giving 120% effort. The greatest Managers i.e. Brian Clough expected at least 110% effort from every player and look what he won with out big time charlies. The reason we are where we are is the top teams do not have the same team spirit as us and all players giving 120% plus effort. Have we forgot the games we should have won for one reason or another didn't we would be sat in 3rd to 4th place with out a quality striker although Beneitz looks promising when he can run at defences. I wouldn't care if we went down as I have watched a Blues team I can be proud of again all battlers for the Blues the last team we had like this was in the Carling Cup final where we were robbed by Liverpool and the first season in the premier. Big Eck knows what team we need and will only buy players who have a blue heart not green fingers! Once a Bluenose allways a Bluenose.
Lol Alex is really pulling the wool over everyone's eyes - all this talk about inflated prices, the desire not to upset the current set of players etc etc etc is just a smokescreen, pure and simple. Had Carson not mentioned the ã40m, Alex wouldn't have had to do this. He's just making sure that those clubs whose players he has targeted don't ask for really silly money.
I think Blues will spend over ã30m this window, with ã10m going on Babel, ã3m on Michel, ã3m on Davis or Gardner, ã7m on McGeady and ã12m on Ibisevic or Klass Jan-Huntelaar (or ã7m on Janko and ã3m on McLean if neither of those want to come). Huntelaar could be the marquee signing Carson Yeung craves.
Can't believe everyone's falling for this nonsense about prices and morale - have you been suckered Tatts or are you just playing along?
Jesus H Christ (if that is your real name) don't make any difference whether Blues have ã40m or ã40, clubs are asking ridiculous prices anyway and not just to Blues. What Eck is saying is what he believes and is true. That's why he won't give Kuranyi ã70k a week and pay ã5m for him he's not worth it as he has 6 months on his contract. Morale is really important too. Remember when Melchiot, Butt, Jarosik and all that lot came? As the article points out Eck is under no pressure to sign dozens of players because we've already achieved staying in the PL. This isn't Championship Manager you know, you can't just list loads of players and say these are signing for this. Eck has been straight and honest with the fans all along and I don't think he's pulling the wool over anyone's eyes and Tatts article shows that he will spend big sums when he feels the time is right and the player is right
Trophies aren't everything. Look at Portsmouth! Blues were Fairs City Cup winners in the early 1960s but things have changed a bit since then! Like every Blues fan, I'd love to see them win a major competition but league success must be the priority.

I have never read so much nonesense in so short a paragraph! Of course winning trophies is everything! That is what football is about! I would rather finish 17th and win a cup than 8th and win nothing.
Plus Blues finished runners-up in the Inter City Fairs cup twice (1960 & 1961) and never won the competition. You should see a doctor and get a check-up from the neck up.
