Random thoughts post Wolves
Why do Wolves persist with karaoke to warm up the crowd? We had a Robbie Williams impersonator last time, who murdered his standards, and Sunday it was someone from the X Factor's top 1,000 or something.
The way Blues started was as good as they have this season. They had purpose, poise, controlled aggression.
The first-half reminded you of the Molineux game in the Championship, when Blues were in control until injury meant Mehdi Nafti came on to play at right-back.
Lee Bowyer is re-born. His goal was the goal of a man in form, confident and fully fit. When he arrived at the club in January I remember chief scout Paul Montgomery, who pushed for his signature, being fairly indignant about jibes that his 'legs had gone'.
If Eck had picked four centre-halves across his back four at St Andrew's, and a defender wide right of midfield to start, he would have been slaughtered. Especially if it had been 4-5-1.
James McFadden, given licence to play where he is at his best - up the field, linking in with the attack and not weighed down with defensive duties - can change games. Ask Michael Mancienne, who didn't have an answer.
When is a penalty not a penalty? Depends if it is David Ngog or Scott Dann going over. What was the linesman looking at exactly?
If you provide towels for the home team long throws, you have to expect the away team to demand them from the ball boys too. Liam Ridgewell wiped the ball down,
handed the towel back, wound up for a Rory Delap . . . and chucked it short, 10 yards. Funny.
Christian Benitez, an enigma? The next Darius Vassell, perhaps, mused my colleague Andy Walker in the press box.
What he brings to the team is mobility, speed, trickery, defenders find him difficult to pin down. He does have a decent game appreciation and intelligence.
On the flip side, he's not a 'natural' goalscorer, he can be muscled off the ball and drift out of it. Yet, no doubt, alongside Cameron Jerome he is effective for the team.
Blues are no longer regimented and predictable up top and, remember, he's still a kid learning to adapt to the Premier League and a new country. He will get better.
Stephen Carr? The best comeback from retirement since Sinatra. Any youngster wanting to know the art of a full-back, just watch him.
Second-half, Wolves squeezed up. They pushed onto Blues. However, it didn't phase Eck's men. They have too much experience, knowledge and calm now. Mentally and physically, Blues were stronger too.
Roger Johnson defends like a basketball centre. He is all over the opposition centre-forward. It could be argued, however, that Dann has the better long-term prospects due to age and on-the-ball ability.
As a pair, with the players protecting to their side and in front of them, they have excelled. In Austria on tour, I feared the worst. They didn't convince. However, both had rushed back from injury and weren't right and had not settled. Just goes to show, you shouldn't always judge on results and performances in pre-season, in general.
Blues got careless towards the end. They invited pressure on themselves by being caught offside, conceding needless free-kicks, losing concentration. Perhaps they were bored.
In midfield, Blues dominated. Wolves couldn't get any foothold. It explains why you wouldn't have known that Kevin Doyle or Sylvan Ebanks-Blake were playing in the first-half.
I don't think he's intentionally disrespectful, but sometimes Mick McCarthy comes across like that towards Blues. A bit like Adrian Chiles. There are better ways of saying things, Mick.

Tatts, I really can't beleieve how well Blues are playing. If we only had a real goal scorer then we could seriously threaten the top ten imo. Roll on January and hopefully the signing of a top class striker.
I don't want to get carried away but in the first half Blues were fantastic. It has to be noted though that Wolves are by far the worst side ever to be allowed into the Premier League. No really they are. I'm serious. And I don't like their kit.
I agree with the bit about McCarthy. He always has a pop at Blues. What he should remember is that Blues were far superior and won the game at half pace with their eyes closed. Doesnt matter how bad you think you were Mick you were nowhere near our boys. Enjoy taking another team down.
You leave my lovely Adrian alone
Blues are playing great and winning is becoming a habit. Unfortunatly for Wolves, losing is becoming a habit. I don't think that McCarthy means anything, its just his tyke way, I believe. As for Chiles he is nasty to a lot of people, Thatchers daughter, for instance. Reminds me of Le Tiss. Neither can play football
We've played better at times than the last two games at times yet the attitude and ability on show from Blues is so freshing to see.
Let's not get carried away (this is Blues after all !) yet enjoy the moment in the toughest league in Europe
i think the thing with McCarthy is that he sees it as his team gifting the opportunities to the opposition. I recall his previous press conferences with Chelsea and Arsenal when they got beat comprehensively. Afterwards McCarthy says that they "gifted Chelsea 2 goals" hmm and Adrian Chiles is he worth a mention? Keep it up Blues. KRO
I went to the game and have to say i have not seen us play as solid as this in a long time. Great stuff lads keep up the great work rate. But remember the best thing that came from this result was it took us 3 points further away from the relegation battle which i am afraid wolves are now playing a major role in.
Role on January and 3 quality signings.
Tatts,
It's interesting you talking about the Jerome/Chucho partnership. For me one's a class apart from the other but neither of them a lethal finisher.
I think Jerome's had ample opportunity at this level to provide goals for the team and - his wonder strike apart - he's failed to impress time and again. He's got undoubted pace and strength and uses them but he lacks for nous to be a top class striker.
Do you agree or am i being harsh on the lad?
PenguinBlue. I'd have to agree with that assessment to be honest. I think with Benitez the played is linked together much better upfront and this allows Jerome o look better as a unit. But overall Jerome doesnt seem to have any technical ability, i.e. control, picking a pass, the other thing with Jerome is that he doesnt seem to know when and where to run. I dont want to come across like im ripping into him because this season he is much improved. If i was McLeish i would pay for Ian Rush or of someone of that ilk to come and have a couple of sessions with him to try and coach him correctly because his attributes (strength/speed) are of a more then decent standard.
McCarthy is annoying and he has no good grace. Jerome and Benitez are both 23 aren't they? The are doing well and imagine if we bring in a class striker in January and those two come off the bench. That's what a PL squad is all about. Adrian Chiles wants to do something about that scrunched up face and his hang up about that bird he tries not to snuggle up to on the tele
Mat,
Can i make a suggestion a little closer to home - Trevor Francis. Reports suggest he wants to get involved at the club again, which i sincerely hope he does, and i'm sure he can help improve Cameron Jerome.
For me Jerome is more like Francis than he is Rush. Rushie was a poacher - one of the best - but TF had to often go and find the ball, play out of position and create goals, which is what i see Jerome doing.
Sadly though, i'm not sure all the coaching in the world will help - what's needed is a new striker!
im genuinely excited, chucho's the best thing since simon sturridge.
Simon Sturridge is not fit to lace Christian Benitez' boots.
