It's finally been done then, the renegotiated transfer of Christian 'Chucho' Benitez.
Should Benitez last the duration of his contract, appearance and achievement targets are met, he will become the club's record $12.5 millon signing, or ã7.75 million.
Due to the knee problem that was identified during his medical, Blues managed to persuade his club Santos Laguna to redraft the original agreement which was $10 million down, plus $5 million in add-ons.
Now Blues have to pay just $2 million, or about ã1.2 million, for the first 12 months. At that point they can exercise a 'get out' option should Benitez have broken down due to his knee.
It's what's termed a 'protected purchase' in favour of Blues and, it has to be said, Benitez was willing to go along with various clauses as well in order to keep his Premier League dream alive.

Thanks Tatts for the accurate updates. I think credit should go to all parties for this deal and their willingness to compromise.
I think our board, especially David Sullivan, have been excellent so far this pre-season. For all the fans previous moans and concerns this summer I hope DS gets the credit for the signings and off the field improvements we have all recently witnessed
Yeah nice one Tatts you've been the only guy who has accurately told us what's happening all along. This deal is a clever one by the board. If Benitez flops then its not crippled us. Four more players should do it now
How nice to see a player who really wants to play for Blues regardless of the fact that he has to accept alterations to his contract. A breath of fresh air... Or am I being niaive?
so tatts does that mean maybe extra funds may be released for other signings? with the down payment decreasing theres around 3.5 million that the board were originally wiling to release. great action so far. KRO
