Mucho Chucho
Remember Emmanuel Olisadebe, the striker that never was?
In July 2002, following promotion to the Premier League, a £3.3 million fee was agreed with Panathinaikos for his transfer.
The Polish international flew into Birmingham and all looked set until he had a medical.
During the examination it was clear that Blues would be taking a big gamble if they proceeded.
The transfer was called off and Olisadebe then had a pop at Blues which in turn gave Steve Bruce the hump.
Bruce had tried to protect the player at first by talking around the reason why it had gone pear-shaped. But after Olisadebe's barbs, he slated him and revealed he not
only had a knee complaint, but a career-threatening back problem.
Fast forward to the present and Blues find themselves in another pickle concerning another signature striker identified to spearhead their return to the Premier
League: Christian Benitez.
A deal worth a potential and club record £9 million was agreed for the Ecuador ace. Yet it has not been plain sailing getting him on board.
His medical showed up a knee problem, something seriousness enough to stop Blues forging on with the transfer.
It came as a shock to them, as well as Benitez, his representatives and his club, Mexican outfit Santos Laguna.
None were aware of it previously and all parties have agreed that the deal needs to be redrafted.
Talks are taking place to find a satisfactory conclusion. There seems a willingness to compromise.
Benitez remains in the country and is desperate to join. From the Blues perspective, the manager and club are prepared to give him that chance.
Blues are hardly going to commit themselves to the vast outlay originally planned due to this change in circumstances, so it is likely a smaller downpayment will be made, and a 'get out' clause inserted into the new deal.
Blues haven't pulled the rug completely because Benitez's is rather an odd case.
In tests he has undergone - and there have been many - his knee has stood up fine.
He has played up to this point in his career without any pain or problems from it, and his condition has apparently been a long-standing one.
So if Blues can cover themselves, and lessen the financial risk, it makes sense to give Benitez a whirl.
Peter Ndlvou suffered the same fate when he was transferred from Coventry City in 1997. That £1.6 million deal was eventually done on a pay-as-you-play. He turned
out all right.
Olisadebe played on too, although he has hardly covered himself in glory in the days since he was on the verge of joining Blues. He is now plying his trade in China.
Others have defied what would be considered accepted medical opinion. Stern John, for example, has a chronic knee condition which should really have put paid to him at Blues.
Only time will tell whether Benitez turns out to be a hit, miss or maybe.

Rather bad luck, maybe it would be better to just pull the plug on the deal and go for someone like Mauro Zarate ? Or even get Benitez on a loan deal.
I love to see us spending the cash but hate to see us waste money.
Thanks for the heads up on this Tatts.
I think the club are doing the right thing, there is no point signing a crocked player, but Benitez isn't crocked, he has never had a problem with his knees, and most likely wont in the future, but the chance of something happening has increased, so the board are repricing their risk accordingly.
Hopefully it all goes through now, as I think he will do a job for us next season, although I hope he can manage the expectations that a lot of Blues fans will have of him.
Colin please don't be so pessimistic what are you a Holte Ender? Sullivan has been on Sky Sports News today saying that yes there's a problem but the deal will still be done and he will still be a Blues player so just stop being so pessimistic. So just cut the attitude as the owners know what's going on.
Pessimistic??
he has just updated us with what is going on with a 'realistic' verdict. you know accusing anyone of being such a vile and disgusting thing (holte ender) is bang out of order. im sure tatts would prefer to be accused of being a serial killer lol!!!!
cheers tatts and lets just hope the move goes through and we can look forward to our new season with new players, ground improvements etc. please let the board know we do appreciate what they are doing this year and to ignore the odd cyber fan who takes every single quote and studies it to turn it around to meaning something negative.
UP THE BLUES & SOTV!
now that the benetez saga has almost been sorted and looks like he will sign, it's another "well done the board" for me, renegotiating the deal in blues favour is only good for the club, sully and the golds certainly seem on the ball this summer,
maybe whilst they are in such a good form that they will push the boat out one more time and get they midfeild playmaker most blues fans want to have, "biglia",
if Eck has seen flaws in his game surley he and his coaches can put that right in pre season and could turn him into the perfect player? he's still young enough to learn and could be a snip at the reported £6mill asking price, that 6mill is only what blues want to pay viera in wages per year.
and imo blues would have a better deal in the long term by buying biglia.
Nathan, you really are a prize plum. Tatts has given us an insight nobody knew about. He is not being negative or pessimistic, he is keeping fans(at least I think you are a fan) like you informed and what he wrote about Blues going ahead has come true and why they did it. I think you ought to cut the attitude and I would happily bet my house that he knows exactly what's going on just like the owners. All that said, fair play the board for getting the deal changed. They wouldn't have done that if there was not a problem now would then Nathan? lol
