Ice, ice baby
Reading may have stolen a march on Blues thanks to the events of the last 24 hours.
Alex McLeish remains quietly confident, though, that his remodelled side will ultimately not be found wanting.
And the manager thinks that there will be an improvement in respect of attacking verve and creativity as the weeks pass.
Speaking today from the team bus as it headed back from Blackpool, where a frozen pitch meant a second successive postponed match for Blues, he revealed that he was going to 'unleash the wingers' - Scott Sinclair and Hameur Bouazza.
Triggering an improvement from the flanks is something that McLeish vowed to do during the current transfer window.
The difference when Reading - 4-0 winners over Watford last night - beat Blues at St Andrew's was the speed, mobility and quality of their wide players, McLeish noted. Reading's forwards benefited from the ball they got, and the way they all dovetailed.
Wolves success has been based on wideboys Michael Kightly and Matt Jarvis. And remember when Coventry City swarmed all over Blues at St Andrew's, they had Jay Tabb and Michael Mifsud buzzing about in the wide areas, Clinton Morrison pulling defenders out in the channels.
Quincy wasn't the man to do it, hence his departure. Instead McLeish got two for the price of one in loanees Sinclair and Bouazza, players he had respectively been tracking since the summer and his Rangers days.
Blues play has been prosaic and sterile in comparison to some sides this season. A lack of pace and movement has been evident.
Throw in Lee Bowyer to the mix, whose strength is to get forward and make telling runs into the penalty area, Blues are altering their make-up significantly.
Bowyer is 32 and Blues have been monitoring him carefully to be sure that, as some reckon to the contrary, his legs haven't gone. If he was a plodding slouch, McLeish wouldn't have proceeded with his loan.
Keith Fahey, too, is a dynamic, attack-minded player.
It's difficult to see McLeish sending Blues out with, say, David Murphy on the left and Kemy Agustien on the right with two 'sitters' in the middle of the park again.
What of the pair who have played most of the season on the flanks, Sebastian Larsson and James McFadden?
Put simply, they have to respond to the challenge. That's what McLeish will be telling them.
Both have been hampered by groin problems, and Larsson hasn't been the same player he was in his previous two seasons, for whatever reasons. Often Blues have been too narrow, which hasn't helped, or played a kind of 4-3-3 to varying degrees of success.
McLeish - who has no intention of selling either, by the way - wants the game taken up the pitch quickly by players who can get up the pitch quickly. That's the Reading template, and it doesn't mean the big boot either.
And, from gauging the manager's mood, there are more players on their way into St Andrew's.
The Kris Boyd transfer is dead until such time it isn't, in that classic kind of Blues way when it comes to hard bargaining on personal terms, and a centre-half remains a requirement. Calum Davenport is back on the market.
McLeish's scouting team are taking in games at home and abroad presently.
One of the worse things you can do in football as a manager is stand still and rest on your laurels.
Had McLeish not used the current trading period to breathe some life and new blood into the side, accepting that Blues needed to be more dynamic and proactive rather than reactive in games, then it might have all gone off.
Anger would have given way to disinterest and apathy, doubtless.
Instead it's now going to be fascinating to see how this change of tack pans out, and what else materialises between now and the closure of the January transfer window.

Colin, whats you gut feeling about Boyd - do you think it will be resurrected by the player?
just echoing what gaz has said due to really karen brady saying in the sun that boyd's agent had been in touch.
did eck give anything away or do you know something tatts.
Welcome back Tatts, thought you'd gone awol.
Great to get a clear view on McLeish's thinking. Really positive moves by AM and hopefully this will translate to the way the team plays on the pitch.
I'm guessing that there will now be a number of players moving on, Quashue, Nafti, McSheffery?
Finally well done to the Board for backing the manager
Great to have you back Tatts thought you'd gone awol. Thanks for reporting on AM's thinking and hopefully the performances will improve with the new signings.

Just a thought, if the Boyd deal is dead, and Man City spend millions on world-class strikers this window, could Eck inquire if Danny Sturridge is available on loan for the rest of the season.
Admittedly we don't want too many loan signings but he's a Brummie with obvious family connections with Blues and given the opportunity I'm sure he would love to do well for his home-town club.
I agree with Eck we need another striker (along with a pacy centre-back), as Bent isn't prolific and O'Connor won't be match-fit for ages. I just hope this window won't be like the Cahill scenario last January, this time if we don't get "our man" then I hope Eck has a good Plan B in place. Come May it could prove to be the difference.
Back to civilisation, just back from the coldest place on earth, the pool of black in the north.
knelt down and kissed the ground at new st station, back in brum, brill.
£46 open rail ticket,£30 match ticket, unknown amount on warm beer and cider,no reaggae music on any jukebox,no decent baltis or kebabs, but what a great day, wolves lost, yess.
i have heard in the grapevine the the Ref called it off because we were going to wear the penguin shirts, and he thought we would have an unfair advantage.
up the blues.

Hi folks, been away for a few days last week so missed most of the fun! Boyd deal isn't dead but Eck is considering others. They've spoken to Man City about their players, in all positions, as well as a number of other PL clubs. I agree re Sturridge, he would be a good acquisition. I'm not so sure that there are going to be a whole host of players leaving; if any do, it will more likely be those who are on the periphery and are not getting a look in at present. By the end of the window, the team could have a very different look about it.
cheers tatts for keepin us posted
Hi Tatts
Good to have you back!!! Hope you are well?
If I am honest I'm not that bothered about the Boyd deal going through, what Karen Brady said in her Sun column yesterday summed it up when she stated that he couldn't even be bothered to travel down. I'd rather be spending that money in defence, a couple of centre halves in particular, I feel our rivals are now regularly exploiting this weekness in our team and we require some pace in our back 4. Any news how Kelly's injury is progressing? I would also spend the 1 million pounds Man City are asking for Casper Schmeichel, I think he'd be a good long term replacement for Maik Taylor.
The forward line we already have I feel will benefit from some added pace on the wings and also creativity within the midfield. With KP, Jimmy Mac, Jerome and O'Connor back in Feb I think this strike force is sufficient given the service. Hopefully the new arrivals may give Larsson the competition he may need to get back the form he showed in the Premier League.
Keep up the good work mate.
Tatts,
Great blog as ever, and you were missed last week during the transfer mayhem! Any idea of names of players you know/think Big Eck might like to realistically take from Man City? Also, any truth in the link with Matt Mills of Doncaster? I think we are very congested in midfield now and can't see a future for Nafti/Quashie/Agustien - have we had any enquiries for the players AMc wants to get rid of?
Cheers and happy new year,
Rich
tatt's what's going on reports attributed to boyd's agent saying no talks are taking place.
calum davenport a great shout tho
Hi Colin. Long time no see. A lot of people over here expecting big things of Keith Fahey. Given a bit of time he could be one of the most explosive and exciting midfielders Blues have seen. I would recommend everyone to check out compilations of his goals for St Pat's on You Tube.
