Mutch ado about something
It's fair to say that Blues performance in the win over FC Viktoria Plzen was pleasantly surprising.
Maybe it's because we're used to certain disciplines from Blues. Maybe it's because a lot of players are feeling the heat for their places.
Maybe it was because they were infused with the youthful energy of Jordon Mutch, desperate to show his worth at senior level, and the determination of trialist Zola Matumona to impress.
But there was no doubting the dynamism of Blues play, and the accent on taking the game to the other team rather than trying to set their stall out to be solid and not give much away.
There was slick, quick passing, forward running from the centre and flanks ahead of and to support the strikers. Full-backs overlapping even.
There's been a lot of talk about the signings of Lee Carsley and Kevin Phillips, centring primarily on their age.
Being close up to the action as we were in the St Johann sportstadion, you could not only see who is doing what a little better, but saying what.
And both of them, it was obvious, command the respect of their team mates and are talkative leaders on the pitch, passing on advice and orders.
Their movement is top class as well. Both know where to be, and when.
Considering James McFadden, Sebastian Larsson and Marcus Bent were among those watching, it bodes well for Blues.
Perhaps the most eye-catching aspect of the night's work (apart from Matumona's cameos) was Mutch's display.
Sometimes young players coming through the ranks can be too hyped. In Mutch's case, on what was a key game for him, it's justified.
I have seen him a several times in youth and reserve team football and although it was clear the kid has ability, he had raw edges and was steady without being spectacular.
Last night he came of age. The other players were talking about him, which is a sign in itself, and Alex McLeish - not one for hyperbole - was generous in his praise.
You sense that McLeish, schooled in the Sir Alex Ferguson way, will handle Mutch shrewdly.
He's not daft, is Eck, and it's not often you are able to catch him out, as the Birmingham Mail's photographer Tim Easthope found out.
The St Johann ground, situated in the Kitzbuhel Alps valley, was entirely open. There was no shelter whatsoever from the rain that teemed down from the clouds that seemed to hang around us in the air like a blanket of fog.
Tim was desperate to stunt a particularly cheeky shot and said: 'Alex, can you hold this umbrella for me please'.
McLeish smiled and drew his hand up to his mouth as if to take a sip from an imaginary cup of coffee. Tim had been rumbled: 'Steve McClaren eh?'. The 'wally with the brolly' picture bit the dust.
