Sorry Nick...a public apology.

It's taken me four years but I've finally plucked up the courage to make a confession in the hope that it will somehow absolve me of guilt.

It surrounds an event I'm really not at all proud of when my eldest lad was aged 10.

It happened on a cold Feburary afternoon on a playing field in Balsall Common and is indelibly imprinted on my memory.

It was the day I made my son cry at football.

I'll never forget the look of derision mixed with contempt from his manager, a kindly Irish chap who quite rightly extolled the Corinthian values of junior football.

Nick's side had just conceded a goal and I informed him it was his fault, without thinking of the consequences - within seconds his face crumpled and tiny tears rolled down his face.

I cannot begin to describe how worthless I felt and I've told him so countless times since.

But thanks to a new book titled You'll Win Nothing With Kids by Jim White, my entire attitude towards junior football has changed.

By reading about the mindless dads whose touchline antics have ruined their children, I have learned it really is about learning, developing but most importantly, enjoying the game, whatever the result.

If you think you might be like I once was, get this book - it will change you forever and give your lad the breathing space to grow into a decent footballer at his own pace.
