Cough up love, he's done it!

AT 2.15pm on Sunday a litle bit of history was made...and it cost my wife dear.

Two seasons ago Alex was just starting out in his first football team, a latecomer to the game short on confidence but high on desire to do well.

By the end of last season he had established himself as a first choice player and was made captain at the start of this, moving from right back to centre back.

In recent weeks he has switched into the heart of midfield but has always dreamed of scoring like his elder brother, a striker, who has hit 20 this season.

Then shortly after kick off today he got across his marker to rifle a volley into the top corner to my absolute delight.

His goal celebration summed him up - turn round and run back to the centre spot, admittedly with a huge grin on his face.

I rang his mum to tell her. Cue shrieks of joy despite the fact that she'd promised him a fiver when he broke his duck in front of goal.

When I got home my first thought was to ring my dad to let him know the momentous news...forgetting once again momentarily that he is no longer with me.

I'm sure he was looking down on his grandson's triumph and beaming as broadly as me.
