"Throwing my arms around Moscow", as Morrissey would say

By Bill Howell on Feb 26, 09 09:55 AM

Moscow is big.

You wouldn't believe how big.

You might think a walk down to the newsagents to buy a pint of milk might take the breath out of you. That's peanuts to Moscow.

So you're chances of bumping into a British football supporter are as slim as a supermodel on a diet.

Randy Lerner is staying in the biggest and plushest hotel of them all in Red Square.

He's bought some Villa fans a pint, so I'm told. Not bad when they cost £10 a throw.

I haven't yet worked out whether you are allowed to cross the roads on green, or even on a zebra crossing. Sometimes you just take your life in your hands and go for it.

And the street names and signs and completely undecipherable.

You can get lost in an instant.

Then you're in the hands of the dozens and dozens of taxi's which pull up looking for business.

Most would never get near an MOT back home. Some look held together by sticking tape.

It's cost you around a tenner to go a couple of miles. But that's takes a bit of bartering.

Each street full of opposites. A strange mix of extreme poverty and the fabulously decorative.

There are attempts to fuse Western culture - bright sparkiling lights added to old, grey office blocks, 100 foot cinema posters...

Starbucks in abundance. McDonalds too. Although you can only make out the 'm' and not the rest of the title.

The Kremilin looms large on the horizon. and the most beautuful, ornante architecture can be seen every few hundred yards.

Red Square alluded us last night.

We - and this is a group of a dozen or so supporters - walked the streets for two hours just searching for anything open late.

We didn't succeed.

Moscow was shut.

The casino, with a dozen sleek black Mercedes cars parked outside, definitely wasn't. But the guards outside were not open to the possibility of scruffy English folk taking a peek inside.

I take it all back about the cold.

Suddenly, after midnight, after we had been walking for an hour or more the temperature dropped alarmingly.

The canal was frozen right through. Even the edges of the wide Moskva River, were sludge.

Back at the hotel the only topic remains the game and the chosen team.

All agree the defence is strong and that John Carew can get a goal.

But the midfield?

One supporter on the flight over had suggested a win tonight would be as big as a four goal victory at Old Trafford.

Hope still lingers.

The coach is meeting these fans at 5.30pm local time, 2.30pm yours, to take them to the stadium around five miles away.

A police escort will drop them back in Red Square after the final whistle.

After recent trouble when England were over, and for that matter Arsenal, there is talk of more ahead.

But for the moment it is only rumour.

For these hardy fans the thought of defeat, coupled with a failure to beat Stoke City is not yet worth contemplating.

Some interesting Google-sponsored ads next to this blog post. 'Date Russian Ladies', 'Worst Football Keepers' and 'Re-train as a Plumber' - what a mixed bag!
P.s. O'Neill is a disgrace for the way he threw away a genuine opportunity of silverware for us success-starved Villa fans.

Dare I say 'O'Neill out!' - now I'm just getting carried away.

Bill when you see ONeill make sure you tell him that all villa fans will now be judging him come May. If he doesnt get us into the top 4 he might as well pack his bags. I will NEVER think the same about O'Neill. The man's a coward and has made the fans look stupid.

I know most people on Villa Talk and other villa boards feel the same.

O'NEILL OUT!

Boris and Stan,

What stupid comments. I was in Odense at the very start of this Euro adventure and what a let down it has been. With the exception of Ajax, how many decent games have we seen / world class players? This competition is the equivalent of the LDV Vans trophy compared to the Champions League which from a glamour, finance persepective is in a different stratosphere. The only mistake MoN made was not playing more squad players in the first game. We were lethargic against Chelsea (the biggest game of the season) and MoN knew changes had to me made. No high profile players will join if we win the UEFA cup but they will if we are in the Champions League. BTW, how many full strength sides has MoN played away in Europe? Hamburg? Prague? Why was it so much of a surprise? I feel for the fans who went but look at the bigger picture, get behind the team and stop moaning.

Please tell me the "O'Neill Out" comments are a joke...Because if anyone is seriously wanting him out then they are the joke. The team has progressed brilliantly under him and hopefully Villa will have Champions League football as a reward next year. He is one of the best managers around.
The only fans with any kind of right to complain about Moscow are the ones who forked out a fortune to go there. But, as with any game whether it was at Villa Park or the other side of the planet, it's the manager's call who he picks and who he doesn't and they have to accept that whether they like it or not. We have to trust him. Let's be honest, he hasn't made too many mistakes since he arrived and, at worst, the "reserve" team selection for the UEFA Cup was only a mistake.
Personally, I don't care about the UEFA Cup. I was more gutted to see them knocked out of the FA Cup. But if Villa finish in the top 4 come the end of the season, no one is going to be looking back and saying: "Pity we got knocked out of the UEFA Cup isn't it?"
Like TheVoice said, let's get behind them and try to help bring Champions League football to Villa Park.

I agree with Michael.
I admit I was shocked when I heard who MON was leaving behind, but the more I think about it, the more I respect his decision. The Champions League is the big time, let there be no doubt , he has made a tough decision , and stood by it , and I respect it absolutely.

I do feel sympathy for those Villa fans who paid thousands to travel to Moscow, but come on ,think back to when David O'Dreary was the manager, when we were missing relegation by an odd point or three , where would you rather us be , right now ?

More power to MON , may he be in charge for many years to come.

Some Villa fans are very fickel and have such short memories, I actually went to Moscow so if anyone has a right to moan, I am one of them.
I dont agree with MON's decision in Europe, however he does not deserve the boo's and O'neill out chants some of these morons are suggesting. Martin O'neill is still the best thing that has happened to Villa in a long time and who do these villa fans think will come in and replace him, in my mind they aint real fans go and support small heath!!!
